A week-long programme of events to celebrating International Women’s Day takes place at Newcastle City Library this week.
The global celebration of the achievements of women past, present and future will be marked with free performances of music and theatre and appearances from local authors.
On Wednesday March 10 at 2pm prolific historical crime writer Anne Perry visits to City Library to discuss her new book “Execution Dock” - the 16th in the Inspector William Monk series.
The event has been organised by Newcastle Libraries Reader Development team as part of their series of Meet the Author events which see authors appearing in the city every month.
This event is free but places must be booked in advance by phoning 0191 277 4100 or emailing information@newcastle.gov.uk.
The same evening (6:30pm, Room 7 Level 6) a group of local women writers will also be reading from their most recent works. Readers will include award winning writers Catherine Graham, Maggie Tate, Degna Stone, Shirley-Anne Emmerson, Sue Spencer and Sheree Mack.
On Thursday March 11 (6pm) Carolyn Jess-Cooke will launch her new collection of poems “Inroads” at City Library. New Writing North has selected Carolyn as one of the Read Regional poets and authors who will tour the region this year promoting their books.
The following day (Friday March 12, 2:30pm) Them Wifies and Theatre Pie theatre companies will perform a new play specially written for International Women’s Day.
“Breaking the Cycle” aims to raise awareness about domestic violence and the support available to women in the north east.
The week will be rounded off on Sunday 14 March with a performance from harpist and singer Janet Bennett (4pm)
Local musician Janet has been acclaimed as one of the finest harpists and self accompanied singers in the UK. She trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and is the official harpist to the Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne.
