Khaled Miah from Vujon has been crowned the winner of this year's Curry Chef Competition at a hotly contested cook-off at the Civic Centre today, Wednesday, 28 September.
Khaled's award winning dish was Chilli Hot Sea Bass Goan Style, Dill Pillou Rice and Mishti Aloo.
The new curry chef champion beat off stiff competition from finalists Bob Arora from Sachins and Bhoju Moolya from Dabbawal.
Judges including Simon Preston, Director of the EAT! Festival, Andy Hook from Blackfriars Restaurant and managing director of the Hooked On Group, and curry fan Tom Means found it very hard to choose the winner of this year's competition but Khaled's creativity took the top prize.
The annual competition is organised by the Newcastle City Council's Food Safety and Health Improvement team and promotes good practice in food hygiene and healthy eating.
After winning his award, Khaled said: “I’m very happy - I was confident that I would win.
“I was a runner-up last year but I’m glad that my confidence has been enough to help me win.”
Cllr Henri Murison, cabinet members for Quality of Life, applauded the winner.
He said: "I would like to congratulate Khaled from Vujon on winning this year's competition and pay tribute to his creativity and wish him and his restaurant great success. Khaled’s restaurant and those of our finalists play a major role in our city's economy and I would like to thank them for their hard work.
“The hospitality industry in Newcastle, which these restaurants play a major part, contribute so much to our city’s economy and support a large number of jobs in these tough times."
